On Any Kind of Relationship
- M: what do you look for in a person you want to hang out with?
- me: Hm. I know. No expectations. I have no expectations when I hang out with someone. I expect the same thing with him or her.
- ---
- Why is that? I find that people with expectations when one is hanging out with another have these idealized assumptions on how people should build a relationship or how people should treat another. For instance, "A friend wouldn't do this. A friend should be like this. How come you don't behave like this? The rest of my friends are like this." They kind of want to put you in this kind of ideal when in reality every person is different and has different sets of values and such. And if those assumptions or idealizations are not met, then they end up being insecure about the relationship being built or getting mad at themselves or at that someone. Or think that they're being attacked or whatnot, while the other person just continues to do his/her thang.
- But yeah, I would just accept the person for who he or she is. And if we do not get along, that is fine. You just don't hang out. And then you just move on. Nothing wrong with the person, they're just different, and that is fine. So yes, that's one of the things I look for when it comes to any type of relationship. Friendship... boyfriend... casual... family... classmates... whatever! What I focus on, then, because of this, is to just have fun and to build awesome memories!
